چکیده

We resolve a controversial issue of the stability of composite vortex solitons in self-focusing saturable nonlinear media. Stable vortex solitons with hidden angular momentum, i.e., composed of counter-rotating beams with topological charges +1 and −1, are found, and their linear-stability region is identified. In contrast, the solitons with explicit vorticity are always unstable against splitting. The predicted linear stability of the hiddenvorticity solitons is achieved in the strong-saturation regime, when the soliton’s total power exceeds a certain threshold. The dynamical stability is verified in direct simulations of nonlinear model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 42.65.Tg; 42.65.Jx; 03.65.Vf

Vortex pairs in nonlocal nonlinear media

Dynamics of vortex pairs with the same and opposite circulations are studied theoretically in nonlocal nonlinear media with different intervortex separations. We demonstrate that the nonlocal nonlinear response not only leads to a dramatic suppression of the elliptical instabilities but also helps in the formation of quasi-stable rotating and breathing bound states for vortex–vortex and vortex–...

Stable vortex and dipole vector solitons in a saturable nonlinear medium.

We study both analytically and numerically the existence, uniqueness, and stability of vortex and dipole vector solitons in a saturable nonlinear medium in (2+1) dimensions. We construct perturbation series expansions for the vortex and dipole vector solitons near the bifurcation point, where the vortex and dipole components are small. We show that both solutions uniquely bifurcate from the sam...

Some Canonical Examples of Streamwise Vortex Structure for Rotating Components

Nose cones, turbine blades and bearings have rotating components and represent very practical geometries for which the modal behavior of vortex structures is not completely understood. These three rather different physical cases are being studied. A common theme of competition between modes and vortex types, whether counter-rotating or co-rotating, emerges. The objective of ongoing work is to o...

Ultra-Stable Matter-Wave Gyroscopy with Counter-Rotating Vortex Superpositions in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Matter-wave interferometers are, in principle, orders of magnitude more sensitive than their optical counterparts. Nevertheless, creation of matter-wave currents to achieve such a sensitivity is a continuing challenge. Here, we propose the use of Optical Angular Momentum (OAM) induced vortex superpositions in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) as an alternative to atom interferometers for gyrosco...

On cooperative instabilities of parallel vortex pairs

We present a combined analytical and numerical study of the instabilities of a pair of parallel unequal-strength vortices. We extend the analyses of a vortex in an external strain field (Crow, AIAA J. vol. 8, 1970, p. 2172; Widnall et al., J. Fluid Mech. vol. 66, 1974, p. 35) to include the orbital motion of the vortex pair. For counter-rotating pairs, the classic Crow-type periodic displacemen...
